Getting Started with Essential Oils

almond oil (web)

It seems everyone is either using essential oils or selling them or both.  There are so many oils and so many possible applications, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choices!

If you’re just getting started, consider Beeyoutiful Almond Oil.  This natural oil, 100% Pure & Natural prunus amygdalus dulcis, is extracted from almonds and is a great carrier oil.

Almond oil can also be used directly on the skin as a moisturizer or a massage oil.  Many essential oils can cause irritation if used directly on the skin.  They can be used safely when added to a carrier or base oil, such as almond oil.

Many of our favorite essential oil recipes use almond oil as the carrier oil.  Here’s my personal favorite.  This is our family’s fever treatment now–so much safer than over-the-counter medications!

Fever Relief
Add 3 drops of lemongrass oil to 1 tsp. of almond oil.
Apply to temples, wrists, bottoms of feet.

While you’re on your way to adding to your supply of essential oils, you can use almond oil directly on the skin as a moisturizer or a massage oil.  It is a great cuticle repairer, and it can also be used to remove make-up from skin.

lavender oil

Once you’ve begun with almond, add another great oil–lavender!

Lavender is a great massage oil.  Lavender’s anti-inflammatory properties help to relax and relieve sore, tense muscles.  Massage several drops of lavender oil into your feet.  You can also mix a few drops of lavender with almond oil for an overall body massage.

For a soothing soak, combine 4-5 drops of lavender oil with a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and add to a warm bath.

Suffering from insomnia?  A couple of drops of lavender oil on your pillow will often bring on a restful sleep.  You might also use lavender oil in a diffuser beside your bed.

Lavender also has anti-fungal properties.  Apply a few drops to toenail fungus or athlete’s foot once or twice daily.  Within days, the lavender begins to break down the cell wall of the fungus and prevents new growth.  If the skin becomes dry from this treatment, add a few drops of almond oil to moisturize.

Lavender promotes quick regeneration of skin cells, so burns and wounds heal more rapidly when treated with lavender oil.

For regular use, even when you have no physical or emotional complaints, use lavender oil as a perfume by dabbing it on your pulse points.  This is far preferable to synthetic fragrances which can soak in and harm your body.

Beeyoutiful’s pure lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the lavender plant.  Although it is considered safe to use internally as well as undiluted on skin and in bath water, it’s always best to test for skin allergy or sensitivity first.  Apply a drop diluted with a bit of almond oil to the inside of your elbow.  If there is no reaction after 10 minutes, you are probably not hypersensitive to lavender.

Almond and lavender are a good combination for getting started, but we’ve only scratched the surface!  Click here to learn more about Beeyoutiful essential oils and to start building your own collection!

You’re missing out!

IMG_2937If you haven’t tried our moisturizer and olive oil soap, I really think you’re missing out.  I know that sounds a bit strong, but I really do think that!

Before we started making our own moisturizer, we looked high and low for a moisturizer that moisturized dry skin without being overly fragrant and without breaking the bank!  We just couldn’t find one that measured up.  We make ours from a paraben-free lotion base (we’ll be happy to send the full ingredient list to anyone who asks for it) with vitamin E oil and Beeyoutiful’s Almond Essential Oil added.  It’s basically unscented which makes it very popular with the guys and with anyone who’s sensitive to strong smells.  And it works!  It truly does moisturize even very dry skin.

And the soap!  It’s Pure Olive Oil Soap.  That’s all.  Just olive oil and natural glycerin.  It, too, is basically unscented, and it cleans without leaving any oil residue and without over-drying the skin.  This is my face bar and my body bar, and it’s also our family hand soap.  At $4 per bar (or $10 for 3 bars), you won’t find a comparable olive oil bar at such a good price.

We combine this awesome moisturizer with this pure soap into one beautiful gift set in a golden organza bag and make it available for only $10.  Don’t you know someone whose face would light up at the sight of one of these?

Paraben-Free Moisturizer

IMG_2546[1]

We introduced our Paraben-Free Moisturizer a little over a year ago, and it has become one of our most requested products!  It’s made from a paraben-free lotion base, Beeyoutiful’s Almond Essential Oil, and Vitamin E oil.

Parabens are petroleum-based preservatives.  They’re commonly used in cosmetics and personal care items.  Read a shampoo bottle and you’ll probably find parabens in the ingredient list:  methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben to name a few.  Thanks to parabens, your shampoo, lotion and deodorant will last for years.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the parabens are entering your body when you use these products.  Research has shown that your body may absorb as much as five pounds of cosmetic chemicals each year.

Check your facial cream and moisturizer labels.  See any parabens there?  When the moisturizer is absorbed into your skin, so are the parabens.  When the parabens enter your bloodstream, they mimic estrogen, sometimes causing hormonal imbalance.  Parabens also commonly cause allergic reactions and contact dermatitis.

We are delighted to offer you an alternative to lotions and moisturizers with chemical preservatives.

Here’s what our friends and customers have told us about our Paraben-Free Moisturizer

I have very sensitive skin, and this moisturizer is great for me.

I’ve had dry skin on my arm for several days.  Nothing I’ve tried has helped.  This moisturizer has made a difference after just one application!

Oooh!  It feels great!

This is wonderful stuff!

Our Paraben-Free Moisturizer comes in an airless pump container, so there’s absolutely no waste–no moisturizer left in the bottle to be thrown away!  You’ll enjoy every drop of this moisturizer!  Click on any of the links in this post to purchase yours now!

Acne and Moisturizers

If you are dealing with acne, you might be thinking, “Moisturizer?!  You’ve got to be kidding!”

Remember the clinical description of acne…  When the skin becomes dry, the sebaceous glands secrete more oil to keep your face and hair lubricated.  If you clean your face well twice a day without also using a moisturizer, you may be signalling your glands to produce more oil, resulting in more acne.

After cleaning your face, use a non-comedogenic moisturizer–one that doesn’t clog the pores.  But here’s something to think about:  According to some dermatologists, “no single product is non-comedogenic for everyone.  For example, a person with very oily skin may still get skin breakouts from products that another person with mildly oily skin may find non-comedogenic. A better term may be non-acnegenic rather than non-comedogenic, but this is not so widely used. It is important to test a new product on your own skin rather than rely on the label, before using it freely.”

It may surprise you that we recommend Miracle Skin Salve as a moisturizer.  Some who have used have Miracle on the face reported that it caused them to have more acne.  The same people later found that if the Miracle was applied only immediately after cleaning the skin, it actually helped to clear up the acne.  If the Miracle is applied too heavily, it does seem to clog the pores, causing more acne.  BUT if it is applied lightly to clean skin, it actually helps to prevent acne and heal blemishes.  It is VERY IMPORTANT to clean the skin before every application of Miracle.  This is true for most moisturizers.

Another moisturizer to consider is Smith Family Resource’s Paraben-Free Moisturizer.  As the name indicates, this moisturizer contains no parabens (chemical preservatives) and is non-comedogenic for most people.  Remember always to apply lightly and only to clean skin.

Experiment until you find the best balance of moisture for your skin. Remember that acne may result from over-washed skin that becomes too dry AND from over-moisturized skin that becomes too oily. The goal is to keep the skin lightly moisturized but free of excess oil.

We’d like to hear your ideas about clean skin, too.  We always enjoy your comments!

Acne

Acne – We all know it when we see it, and we don’t like it!  What causes it?  And is there anything we can do about it?

Here’s a medical/scientific explanation from the Mayo Clinic:

“Acne occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.  Hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands.  These glands secrete an oily substance known as sebum to lubricate your hair and skin.  Sebum normally travels up along the hair shafts and then out through the openings of the hair follicles onto the surface of your skin.  When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, the two can build up in the hair follicles and form together as a soft plug, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive.

“This plug may cause the follicle wall to bulge and produce a whitehead.  Or, the plug may be open to the surface and may darken, causing a blackhead.  Pimples are raised red spots with a white center that develop when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected.  Blockages and inflammation that develop deep inside hair follicles produce lumps beneath the surface of your skin called cysts.  Other pores in your skin, which are the openings of the sweat glands onto your skin, aren’t normally involved in acne.”

Now here’s a non-medical/non-scientific response to the problem:

The simple solution is to keep the skin so clean that no follicle can become plugged with oil. Realizing that many factors contribute to the oiliness of one’s skin, some people will have acne no matter how clean they are.  This post is not intended to make anyone feel that their face-washing (or lack thereof) is to blame for their acne!  Still, keeping the face clean and free of oil is a good place to start. If you don’t already have a regimen for face-washing, consider this…

Milk & Honey Facial Bar (web) soap c

Splash your face with warm-hot water.  The warm/hot water will cause the pores to open.  Lather Beeyoutiful’s Milk and Honey Facial Bar or SFR’s Pure Olive Oil Soap in warm, clean hands.  Apply the lather generously to the entire face, especially oily areas, being careful to avoid the eyes.  The facial bar lather will clean away the excess oil.  Then splash your face clean with cold water. The cold water will cause the pores to close.   For best results, do this twice a day, preferably at the beginning of the day and again at the end of the day.

Note:  It is very important to keep clean skin moisturized.  Over-washing can actually cause more acne.  More about that in an upcoming post…
