Happy Summer!

DSC_0131.JPGMonday was the official first day of summer!

For those of you who are teachers and homeschooling parents, summer brings a change of pace from the rest of the year.  During this time of regrouping and planning for next year, I hope you’ll also consider the supplements that will help your family in the year to come. Even if summer is just a change of temperature for you, it’s still a good time to consider adding a multivitamin to your daily regimen.

It’s my personal belief that every American needs to take a multivitamin!  I know you make healthy choices and prepare nutritious meals for your family.  But because of the food options that are available to us, not many of us can meet all of our nutritional needs with diet alone.  Thankfully, the Beeyoutiful Supers are available to help fill in the nutritional gap.

If you’re not already taking a multivitamin, resolve to change that this summer!  This is an especially good time to start because of our referral points plan!  As I said, I think EVERYONE needs a multivitamin.  So talk to your friends and encourage them to start this summer, too.  When your friends purchase any Beeyoutiful’s multivitamins from Smith Family Resources- SuperDad, SuperMom, SuperLady, SuperKids, or SuperMom 2 Bee- you can earn referral points which can be redeemed for FREE multivitamins!

If your friends are ordering online, tell them to click the box by “Referral?” and enter your name.  If they’re ordering by email or phone, they should mention your name at the time the order is placed.  You’ll automatically receive one point for each individual vitamin order and four points for a Beeyoutiful Family Pack order!  (Maximum referral points per friend=4)

Ten points may be redeemed for one bottle of the Super vitamin of your choice- absolutely free with no shipping charge!  (Referral points have no cash value and may not be redeemed for any other products.)  When you’ve earned ten points, we’ll contact you by email and send your free vitamins on their way to you.

Yeast Cleanse/ Probiotic Boost

“If you’re having issues of just about any kind that keep coming back, it is a good indication of an unhealthy gut.”

Beeyoutiful’s Steve Tallent wrote about some steps we can take toward better health, specifically toward having healthier intestinal flora.  The original article appeared in 2012, but the information is just as relevant today as it was then.  Here’s an excerpt from his article…

“…Here is  the absolute minimum of what you need to know.  A healthy gut contains trillions of good bacteria.  A healthy gut provides up to 70% of the body’s immune function.  Antibiotics kill off good bacteria as well as bad.  One dose can kill 50% of the good bacteria in the gut.  Bad bacteria, like weeds, tend to reproduce faster than good and can keep good bacteria from rebuilding their strong colonies.

“Yeast overgrowth is common in the U.S.  Symptoms of yeast overgrowth include just about every complaint you can possibly muster including fatigue and inability to concentrate, frequent infections, skin conditions, itchiness, diarrhea and constipation, and a host of other things there is no room to list.  If you’re having issues of just about any kind that keep coming back, it is a good indication of an unhealthy gut.  Eating probiotic-rich foods is good for maintaining a healthy gut, but supplementation is required for rapid reclamation of the gut.

“We recommend 3 Yeast Assassin per day along with 4 Acidophilus Blast to combat yeast for 1 month, followed by 2 Tummy Tuneup per day for 1 month, then 1 Gut Guardian per day for 2 months, then 1 Gut Guardian Supreme per day for 2 months. Along with that, avoiding sugar, especially in the first month, will be extremely beneficial.”

Note:  Pregnant or nursing mothers may use Yeast Assassin Lite instead of Yeast Assassin.  Yeast Asassin Lite is made of caprylic acid without the potentially harmful-in-pregnancy extra ingredients found in regular Yeast Assassin.

In the four years since we shared this article, several of our family members, friends and customers have been helped by this regimen.  If you’ve found it helpful, will you tell us about it?  Your testimonial just might encourage someone else to take a great step toward better health.  Tell us your story in the comments, or write to us at smithfamresources@att.net.  We look forward to hearing from you!

The Invisible Universe

“The next time you look in a mirror, think about this: In many ways you’re more microbe than human. There are 10 times more cells from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi in and on our bodies than there are human cells.

“Scientists increasingly think that these microorganisms have a huge influence on our health. Without them, our bodies don’t seem to do as well. We don’t seem to be as healthy and might actually get sick more often.”

Be Immune!

It’s been a strange winter here in the South.  One Saturday, it was 30-something with snow flurries.  The very next weekend, it was 65 degrees and sunny.

This winter has brought us some unusual weather, but it has also brought the typical colds, fever viruses, stomach viruses, and flu.

We’re all doing our best to dress for the weather (no need to put away the summer clothes this year) and to avoid the germs that we know are literally everywhere.

One of the best things we can do is to boost our immune systems.  Eating nutritious meals and getting plenty of exercise and rest will help.  But sometimes we need supplements to give us the extra boost we need.

Beeyoutiful has three products you might want to consider adding to your winter regimen:  Ultra Immune, Bee Immune, and Colostrum Transfer Factor.

Ultra Immune – Ultra Immune contains allicin, specifically AlliSure®.  AlliSure® is Ultra Immuneproduced through a patented process which formulates allicin liquid from raw garlic.  The liquid is spray-dried to produce allicin powder.  Research has shown that allicin can help to lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure and to prevent colds, strep and flu.  Ultra Immune also contains black elderberry extract which, according to studies, has helped flu patients recover in 3.1 days, compared to the average 7.1.  Olive leaf extract is added for its reputation in fighting the common cold, cold sores, impetigo and infections.  Rosemary essential oil serves as an antiseptic and helps regulate blood sugar and blood pressure, and oregano essential oil helps the body destroy even antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.Bee Immune (web)

Bee Immune – Two capsules of Bee Immune provide the equivalent of 1500 mg of bee propolis.  Propolis, made by bees from the highly antiseptic resins found in most tree buds, is reported to build immunity, to work against non-native yeast in the gastrointestinal tract and to inhibit the growth of many infectious diseases.

Colostrum Transfer Factor – Colostrum is the nutrient-rich, pre-milk fluid produceColostrum (web)d by all mammals during the first few days after giving birth.  It has an extremely high concentration of immunoglobulins (uniquely structured proteins that naturally contribute to healthy immune function).  Colostrum has been shown to increase overall immunity, expedite the body’s natural process of wound healing and assist in the maintenance of healthy bacterial response, in adults as well as children.
Tummy Tuneup
And, since a good bit of the immune system resides in the intestinal tract, supplementing with a high-quality probiotic is also a good idea.  Our family’s favorite is Tummy Tuneup.  Tummy Tuneup contains eight different species of good bacteria (including lactobacillus acidophilus) and is designed to support gastrointestinal health and immune system function.

Enjoy the winter, and stay well!

Cows, We Owe You!

“Admitted coffee lovers that we are, our family couldn’t resist naming this fall’s baby cow De-Calf, but we could just as well have called him Debt-Relief.  We owe the local 4-H cattle project the first cow from my daughter’s big brown heifer since she was donated to us (the heifer, not my daughter) by the area Cattlemen’s Association.  So keeping the little bull-to-be healthy from the start has been a high priority.  Thankfully, his mother (the cow, not me) has done her duty since the night he was born.  Unlike some animals we’ve endured, she’s blessed with sufficient maternal instincts to nurse De-Calf freely, which means he received healthy doses of colostrum during his first few days of life.

“Colostrum is the nutrient-rich, pre-milk fluid produced by all mammals immediately after giving birth.  It’s essential for jump-starting a newborn’s immune system-including baby humans.  That’s why breast-feeding advocates encourage mothers who plan to bottle-feed their babies to nurse them for at least a couple of days, in order to impart this life-changing substance.

How Does It Work?

“From observing the results of blood transfusions, health researchers about 60 years ago discovered the value of “immune response factor protein molecules.”  When these key compounds are transferred from a healthy blood donor to a sick recipient, the recipient’s recovery improves.  It came to be called a “transfer factor” because it was first recognized in blood “transfers” from one patient to another.

“Because of HIV and hepatitis dangers, blood transfusion nowadays is a risky way to boost a person’s immune system.  But a risk-free way to the same benefit was discovered about ten years ago in the form of bovine (cow) colostrum.  Bovine colostrum is packed with transfer factors like hydrogen peroxide and immunoglobulins (antibodies), and even though it comes from cattle, it is effective “cross-species” which means the benefits are as pronounced in humans as in cows.

“Healthy cells make hydrogen peroxide on their own to regulate metabolism and fight off invading pathogens, but sick cells need the reinforcement colostrum can provide.  The immunoglobulins go after and stop a microorganism called cryptosporidiosis, a cause of severe diarrhea.  Children and adults with acute or chronic diarrhea can be helped by taking a small, white capsule of colostrum such as Beeyoutiful’s Colostrum Transfer Factor

How Does It Help?Colostrum (web)

“Although cancer cells are always developing in our bodies, our immune systems usually kill them before they spread and do damage- unless we are weakened or unhealthy.  Most of us are compromised in some way these days because of diets “rich” in processed and over-preserved foods, so colostrum is a vital supplement to fortify your body.  If you already have cancer, colostrum is a powerful ally in the fight.  It contains phytic acid which inhibits iron from reaching and nourishing cancer cells.  It also isolates and starves fungi and viruses which would otherwise thrive on the iron in your system.

“I’ve wondered if this colostrum factor accounts for some of the health differences between my younger sister and me.  Our mother bucked the bottle-feeding trend of the time and nursed me, but when little sister was born less than two years later, our by-then overwhelmed mother kept her on a bottle from day one.  Throughout our early years and into adulthood, I have never been sickly, but my sister, who fell victim to seemingly every stomach bug and cold that swept through our elementary school, is now a breast cancer survivor and suffers from frequent sinus infections and bronchitis.

“Recently on a family trip, our five-year-old son’s chewing gum fell out of his mouth onto the floor of a gas station restroom.  Before we could stop him, he’d popped the gum back into his mouth and managed a couple more chews!  The next morning he woke up with a low-grade fever and severe diarrhea which continued for two days straight.  On Day 2 I remembered the anti-diarrheal ability of Colostrum Transfer Factor, and since he can’t yet swallow a pill, every two hours I opened two capsules into a bit of yogurt or applesauce which he ate happily.  By Day 3 his stool firmed up and the diarrhea stopped!  Although Beeyoutiful gave it a happy ending, this story now tops the list of absolutely gross things one of our eight children have done.

How Do You Change the Past?

“Researchers believe the benefits of colostrum don’t end with infancy.  If, like my sister, you or your loved ones did not get the benefit of colostrum as a baby, Beeyoutiful gives you a second chance!

“While an organic, natural diet, free from processed foods, is the ideal protection against disease, you’re probably all too aware of the difficulty of achieving exemplary eating patterns.  I, for instance, know my family’s weakness for cookies (and did I mention coffee?) and how Real Life throws my healthy cooking intentions out the window more than I’d like.  I’ve worried over how we would fare if an epidemic swept our country like the Ebola outbreak in Uganda a few years ago.  Fortunately, studies suggest that taking colostrum offers hope for stopping communicable diseases-whether Ebola, bird flu, AIDS, SARS, or the host of new antibiotic resistant illnesses on the rise.

“Consider the diseases that can be combated with colostrum, according to Joseph B. Marion’s book The Anti-Aging Manual: campylobacter, Candida and E. coli, clostridium (botulism), food poisoning, helicobacter pylori, listeria, rotavirus, salmonella, shigellosis, and streptococcus.  Marion also explains that colostrum counters leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, ulcers, chronic fatigue, diabetes, autoimmunity, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and cancers, and that it may even inhibit schleroderma, fibromyalgia, and multiple sclerosis.

“Notice that many conditions in Marion’s list have to do with intestinal function, and bear in mind that colostrum is a form of probiotic, the opposite of an antibiotic.  While antibiotics can disrupt digestive functioning because they kill all bacteria (good and bad), probiotics balance the effect.  So if you have to take an antibiotic, you might want to offset the downside effects with a probiotic.  In addition, if you are a frequent user of NSAID drugs like ibuprofen, youtummy_tune_120_1r stomach will appreciate the acid neutralizing powers of colostrum. Try alternating Beeyoutiful’s Colostrum Transfer Factor with Tummy Tuneup.

“Rapidly approaching 50 and feeling my metabolism slow down, I’m encouraged by what the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing offers:  ‘colostrum can boost the immune system…It may also accelerate the healing of injuries, increase vitality and stamina, and have an anti-aging effect.’

“So whether it’s the offspring from a 4-H heifer or cows in general for providing a proven health helper like colostrum, to our bovine friends I say: We owe you!”

This article originally titled “How Now?  from the Cow” was written by Nancy Webster and appeared in Beeyoutiful’s Spring 2008 Catalog.

Help for Hypoglycemia

I was recently asked to recommend supplements for someone who deals with hypoglycemia.  Since I didn’t know much about hypoglycemia, I turned to the official website of the University of Maryland Medical Center where I found suggestions for nutrition and supplements.

Following these nutritional tips may help reduce symptoms:

  • Eliminate suspected food allergens, such as dairy (milk, cheese, and ice cream), wheat (gluten), soy, corn, preservatives, and chemical food additives.  Your health care provider may want to test you for food allergies.
  • Eat foods high in B-vitamins and iron, such as whole grains (if no allergy), fresh vegetables, and sea vegetables.
  • Eat antioxidant foods, including fruits (such as blueberries, cherries, and tomatoes) and vegetables (such as squash and bell pepper).
  • Avoid refined foods, such as white breads, pastas, and sugar (unless you need them for an immediate blood sugar increase).
  • Soluble fiber, such as flaxseed and pure oat bran, can slow the rate at which dietary sugars enter the blood and help regulate blood sugars throughout the day.  Consume 1-3 tsp. of either of these fiber sources before meals.  Talk to your doctor first if you have a history of digestive disorders.
  • Some doctors may suggest a high protein diet, although evidence is mixed on the benefits.   A “Zone”-style diet combines proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in a 30/30/40 ratio and can be very helpful in maintaining stable blood sugar throughout the day.  Eat lean meats, preferably those that do not contain hormones or antibiotics.  Cold water fish or beans can also be used for protein.  Limit the intake of processed meats, such as fast foods and lunch meats.
  • Use healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Reduce or eliminate trans fatty acids, found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.  Lower caffeine intake, as caffeine impacts several conditions and medications.
  • Exercise, if possible, 30 minutes daily, 5 days a week.  Light exercise may be advisable at first until you learn how to control your blood sugar and how to manage your diet to tolerate higher intensity exercise.

You may address nutritional deficiencies with the following supplements:

  • A daily multivitamin, containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, the B-complex vitamins, and trace minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, and selenium.  SFR recommendation:  SuperDad, SuperMom, or SuperLady
  • Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, to help decrease inflammation and help with immunity.  Omega-3 fatty acids can have a blood thinning effect.  People taking blood thinning medications should speak to their doctor before taking omega-3 fatty acids.  SFR recommendation:  Omega-3
  • Vitamin C, as an antioxidant and for immune support.  SFR recommendation:  Rosehip C
  • Magnesium, for nutrient support.  If you are taking blood pressure medication or other heart medication, speak to your doctor before taking magnesium.  Magnesium can interfere with certain medications, including some antibiotics and biphosphate medication.  SFR recommendation:  Magnesium Citrate
  • Chromium, for blood sugar regulation.  People with liver or kidney issues or history of psychiatric issues should talk to their doctor before starting chromium supplements.  SFR recommendation:  SuperDad (50 mcg of Chromium per serving); SuperMom (100 mcg of Chromium per serving); or SuperLady (150 mcg of Chromium per serving).
  • Probiotic supplement (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus), 5-10 billion CFUs (colony forming units) a day, when needed for maintenance of gastrointestinal and immune health.  SFR recommendation:  Tummy Tuneup (provides eight strains of bacteria, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, with 4 billion cultures in each capsule) OR Acidophilus Blast (provides one strain of bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and has 8 billion cultures per capsule).

If you have hypoglycemia, please talk with your health care provider BEFORE adding any of these supplements to your daily regimen.  If you’re given the go-ahead to try these supplements, consider adding just one at a time.  Try it for a month or so before adding another, so that you can determine which supplements work best for you.  If you are helped by these suggestions and supplements, we would love to hear from you!bee

Nourishing Food

One of our children had a stomach virus this week.  I wanted so much to nurse him back to health with good, nourishing food.  Our previous bug recovery staples have been Jell-O and Gatorade, and I wanted to avoid the excess sugar.  I asked friends to send me their gluten-free and sugar-free suggestions, and I was so encouraged by all the great ideas!

Here’s what we did…

First thing in the morning, I boiled a whole chicken.  That provided dinner for the family later and about half a gallon of broth which is full of natural probiotics.

As soon as the tummy violence was over, I opened a Tummy Tuneup and poured the powdery contents into a small amount of unsweetened applesauce for him.  I also added a Tummy Tuneup to a bottle of cold water which he sipped throughout the morning.

When he felt like eating, I served him a bowl of white rice with butter and sea salt added.  Other snacks throughout the day were Rice Chex (this was the only sugar he ate all day!), gluten-free crackers, buttered toast on Udi’s gluten-free bread, and chicken broth with sea salt added.

For dinner last night, he had rice with butter, a cup of chicken broth, and a banana.  Before going to bed, he ate a small bowl of unsweetened applesauce with a Tummy Tuneup added.

I’m so thankful to have kept him nourished with good food yesterday!  While he rested, I rediscovered a treasure on my bookshelf:  Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.

Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon

I’m excited about the things I’m learning from this book!  This will help me feed my family good, nourishing food every day–not just when they’re recovering from a stomach virus.  I’ll be blogging about my discoveries very soon.  If you already have Nourishing Traditions, what’s your favorite recipe?  Did you learn something you want to share?  I would love to hear from you!

My Beeyoutiful Pantry

The title of this post is misleading.  My kitchen pantry is anything but beautiful.  Well, my daughter did just recently organize it for me, so it looks a lot better than it did.  Still, it’s not beautiful.  But it IS Beeyoutiful! My Beeyoutiful Pantry ~ Beeyoutiful products in my pantryI guess you can tell from this photo that this family loves Beeyoutiful!

It all started with SuperMom.  That was our first purchase from Beeyoutiful.  Now there are SuperMom tablets and Vcaps for the ladies and SuperDad for the guys.   (In case you’re looking for it, there’s no SuperDad in the picture.  We’re out except for the ones in the keepers on the top right shelf!)   Other favorites are Cod Liver Oil, Cranberry Power CleanseRed Raspberry Leaves, and, of course, Tummy Tuneup.  And we can’t forget the Miracle and all the awesome essential oils.  Do you see anything else here you recognize?

You know, we’d have a lot more room in the pantry if we didn’t use so many Beeyoutiful products!  But that is completely out of the question!

Thanks, Beeyoutiful, for beeyoutifying my pantry!  🙂
